Waterfowl Conservation Workshop 2016 (Sylvan Heights Bird Park, Scotland Neck, NC)

The wordwide community of aviculturists brings together devoted people who share knowledge and hands-on experience in keeping and breeding birds and meeting modern welfare standards. An important condition is that aviculturists continue to unite and collaborate with conservation organizations, in order to fulfil the potential of their passion. - Jan Harteman

Aviculture & Conservation community

We would like to introduce the stakeholders, partners and sponsors of our aviculture and conservation work.

Member of Aviornis International Netherlands

Aviornis International was formed in 1973 by a group of aviculturists to be an organisation that gathers bird fanciers who are occupied in aviculture and preserving wild bird species.

The Dutch chapter has been established in 1978. Today, it is one of the most important organisations in Europe in its field with around 8.000 members in 6 European countries.

The Aviornis International magazine helps to provide two of the main aims of Aviornis - to promote sound husbandry through captive breeding and to have closer co-operation between international breeders to promote their interests.

Member of Threatened Waterfowl Specialists Group (TWSG)

The Threatened Waterfowl Specialists Group operates within the IUCN Species Survival Commission (IUCN-SSC). The SSC is a science-based network of thousands of volunteer experts from almost every country in the world, all working together toward achieving the vision of "a just world that values and conserves nature through positive action to both prevent the loss and aid recovery of the diversity of life on earth."

The IUCN SSC Threatened Waterfowl Specialist Group (TWSG) identifies which Anseriformes taxa are globally threatened, monitors their status, produces international action plans and exchanges information on conservation projects on globally threatened Anseriformes and encourages contacts between everyone working with or enthusiastic about these ducks, geese, swans and screamers.

To conserve the world’s most threatened waterfowl by focusing on direct action; developing, demonstrating and disseminating best conservation practices and processes; and actively promoting and encouraging information exchange on threatened waterfowl monitoring, research, conservation and public awareness worldwide. We will do this through producing and implementing international action plans, incorporating in situ and ex situ conservation tools, as necessary; by providing advice to policymakers, international conventions and practitioners; encouraging information exchange and cooperation amongst threatened waterfowl conservationists and with other relevant conventions and organisations.

Reverse the Red

Reverse the Red is a global movement that ignites strategic cooperation and action to ensure the survival of wild species and ecosystems and reverse the negative trend of biodiversity loss. Reverse the Red brings together a diverse coalition of leading scientists, advocates, and partners committed to using a data-driven and science-based approach to assess, plan, and act for species conservation.

Reverse the Red provides the tools and expertise to empower governments, partners, and local communities to set and reach biodiversity conservation targets and celebrates and amplifies successful achievements for species.

Whether we’re government agencies, NGOs, zoos, aquaria, botanical gardens or multinational agreements, we all have a role to play.

Member of International Wild Waterfowl Association

The International Wild Waterfowl Association (IWWA) was established in 1958 by aviculturists, conservationists, and ornithologists. Currently, one-third of all wild waterfowl are considered threatened or endangered.

The IWWA addresses key needs for the future of endangered waterfowl: protection of natural habitat and increased capacity of captive breeding facilities.  IWWA also supports aspiring aviculturists, biologists, and conservationists by providing valuable training experience and internships.

Each year, the International Wild Waterfowl Association convenes in a different location to tour zoological facilities, network with professionals in the field of avian biology and conservation, and discuss the current state of wild waterfowl.

Participating in EAZA’s Ex-situ Programmes (EEP)

Harteman Wildfowl Aviaires contributes to knowledge, education and conservation of the world's waterfowl. We contribute to EAZA’s Ex-situ Programmes (EEP) as a non-EAZA member. We contribute directly to ex-situ conservation by keeping and breeding threatened species in our private collection; white-winged duck, Baer's pochard and Madagascar teal.

Being part of the EAZA's EEP studbooks, our facilities have been checked by the studbook keepers to verify the quality of the aviaries. Alongside we agreed to fulfil obligations like annual reporting and data sharing through ZIMS (by Species360), medical research, post mortem research and keeping offspring at our location until the studbook keeper has found a suitable new collection. As a private aviculturist I am reaching out to these professional EEP programs and want to be a part of them, and species conservation in general, for the long run.

Sponsored by Species360

Harteman Wildfowl Aviaries is sponsored by Species360. Species360 is a non-profit organization that brings together a global community of zoos, aquariums, and wildlife organizations to collect, share, and analyze vital data on animals under human care.

Every day, Species360 members around the world enter data into the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) – the world’s leading zoological recording keeping system. This comprehensive software platform is used to manage daily animal care, welfare, health, and population management data, offering critical insights to inform best practices for animals in human care.

On the recommendation of EAZA and the Waterfowl Taxon Advisory Group, Harteman Wildfowl received a grant from Species360 in 2022, to become an institutional member of Species360 and manage its avian collection in ZIMS. In 2025, the Species360 board of trustees has approved our membership grant renwal. Our continued use of ZIMS by entering animal data played a significant part in the board’s decision to renew this grant, as an appreciation of our contributions of data to our global conservation community.

Supporting EAZA's Conservation campaign "Wetlands for Life"

Wetlands are fascinating and vital ecosystems, but many people still don’t know much about them. EAZA's Conservation campaign "Wetlands for Life" inspires people to care about wetlands – wherever they are. The campaign will fundraise for selected projects that focus on wetland threats and solutions in the regions where flamingos occur.

Harteman Wildfowl Aviaries supports the Wetlands for Life campaign and will initiate activities to contribute to this campaign and its goals.
